With the help of Ming my Mom got my sisters two 10 gig 1st gen Mac iPods for Christmas. Foolishly I sent them home thinking all my sisters would have to do is download the 1.3 firmware and they'd be on their way with Windows iPods. But boy was I wrong. After spending an afternoon on the phone with my sister we were unable to get them working so they FedEx'd them back out to me. Since it took me way too long to solve this problem I'll write up the solution for future Googlers.

Mission: 1st gen Mac iPod to Windows iPod

You naively run the 1.3 updater and get this message: Updater can't install firmware on connected ipod, the Ipod's hardware and the updater firmware are not compatible.

Solution:

  1. Connect iPod
  2. Go to 'My Computer'
  3. Click on 'Removable Disk'
  4. It will ask you to format it. Format it with a FAT32 file system
  5. Download and install the 1.2.6 updater
  6. Run it and restore your iPod's factory settings
  7. Do what the updater tells you
  8. Download and install the 1.3 updater
  9. Run it and updater your iPod's firmware
  10. Do what the updater tells you

I couldn't find any Apple pages on fixing this problem..

Wanted: ePinions for local services.

Some work still needs to be done to the Hotel, the tax people say it will not be a lot of work to keep it. I just need to fix it up and find a property management company.

So my to do list looks like this:

  • Fix Hotel
  • Get PM company

But now what? I crack open the yellow pages and am faced by countless numbers of anonymous ads for only what I can imagine to be less than reputable property managers and window installers. I really wish there was some local Internet site I could turn to for recommendations for these local services.

Hollywood Reporter: This just in: Late-night news? (Via David Akin)
To a young generation of Americans, Jon Stewart may as well be Walter Cronkite. A new study has confirmed recent surveys that suggest an increasing number of young adults are using late-night comedy and talk shows as their primary vehicle for getting their news, particularly about politics and the 2004 election.

We religiously watch the Daily Show/Jon Stewart. It is the only TV news show our household watches. It is however not my only source of news as our house subscribes to the Globe and Mail, Sunday NY Times, Harpers and Wired. And of course I am addicted to the inter-web.
