The Register: Whatever happened to the Windows Media Center?

On the eve of the giant annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft is set to deep-six its short-lived Windows XP Media Center Edition, according to reliable industry reports received by The Register.
The housemates are having a good chuckle over this.

Update: Check out the windows newsgroups for more speculation.

Chris:
Seattleites are not used to the snow. It seldom snows at all here, and when it does, pandemonium breaks out.

Introducing: iPod Mini.

First impressions:

  • Over priced. They should have aimed for a $150USD street price.

New Years Eve Photos. Only 50% made it to the web for one reason or another :).

The photos were taken on my new Pentax Optio S4 (thanks Mom & Dad).

First impressions of the camera..

  • Tiny! I went and bought an Altoids tin to use as a case (only $3.99)
  • Light
  • The power and picture taking button positions should be swapped to prevent accidently turning the camera off
  • The 4 way joystick is a little wonky since people often accidently press the whole thing which is the 'ok' button which depending on your mode may do very unexpected things
  • I think they should adopt the focusing mechanism of the Canon family (pivotting button instead of two zoom buttons).
  • Feels robust (it's all metal) but the LCD really needs a plastic cover to prevent cracking
  • Only has up to a 200 ISO setting

It's official:
To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to confirm that Matthew Goyer (ID #99xxxxxx) has completed all degree requirements for an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics with a major in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo.

Yesterday was John and Matt 'get a letter from your advisor so that you can go get an H1B visa before they run out day'. See John has been anxiously awaiting this day. For weeks leading up to this day he would talk about how he would be the first in line at the advisors office on Monday morning. I think he even muttered that he was prepared to camp out Sunday night.

Of course Monday rolls around and I yell at him, no less than three times, to get out of bed on my way to get my letter. Of course, silly John had been playing first player killing games all night and was too tired. He ended up sleeping right through our advisor's office hours. Needless to say, I got my letter and will be going to the US while John is destined to spend the next nine months on the couch.

Our friend Jon is quite the blogger:

Saturday:

So I am a complete idiot. Not bright at all.

Monday:

I hate people. Well, idiots anyways.

Don't worry Jon, we love you.

Slashdot: Microsoft's iPod-Killer: Portable Media Center?

I'm very much looking forward to getting off the couch and getting to work on some very cool stuff.

Via D, The Toronto Sun: Winnipeg wants the Penguins.

We watched the game tonight and there was no one in the seats in Pittsburgh. But then again at our annual sibbling Winnipeg Moose game the stands were not very full either.
