Canadian Business: The optimist club
The 2003 Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference (CUTC), a three-day event organized by University of Waterloo students, wasn't quite the adrenaline high the first one was four years ago.
Heh. I was at the first three CUTCs and skipped this one at the 'threadbare Regal Constellation Hotel' because really they're all the same and nothing is new. Everything the big wigs have to say has been covered by Slashdot/Wired/CNet/Blogs months before.

The Globe and Mail: Headed for injury
Minor hockey's controversial ruling allowing players as young as 9 to bodycheck means serious blows to the head are going to increase.

Bodychecking is so unnecessary. I left hockey when I was in grade 8 because it was getting a little too physical and I was a little too small. I then started playing again when I started university. I've now played 5 years of non-contact hockey and I've never had more fun playing the game. Yes, I enjoy a little bumping but there is no need for the style of hockey you see on tv when you're playing for fun. Physical hockey is entertaining but certainly not enjoyable for the rest of the population.

I'm sure I'll encourage my kids to play hockey but I think it'll be a challenge to find a league where they can do so for fun and not one where the parents vicariously live their lost childhoods through their children.

So Nat will be in Seattle next term (I broke the news a few days ago, but got in trouble and had to take it down). I'm working hard to land a job there. If however, I fail to land not just a good job, but a great job there, my plan is to hopefully finish off school.

If you can in any way help me find a great job in Seattle send me an email.

So Nat and I went to Philithy's (the new Bomber) to meetup with the election kiddies (I swear, this is the last election post).

  • They wouldn't let us in! As if we're not involved in the election. Natalie's face is on the button that *everyone* is wearing! (okay just the right wingers.) And today Rob told me I was the only unbiased media source (as if).
  • Good to see a lot of candidates out.
  • It's disappointing that some skipped out (though I understand if you have a Saturday exam).
  • I (finally) met Jesse. One of these days I'll meet the rest of you stalkers. ..If you see me on campus/at the bar, say hello! (But don't say hi to my girlfriend. It freaks her out that people know her through the weblog/button :) ).
  • Michelle is much hotter than her Imprint picture. (Then again, so is Chris Edey. His picture makes him look like he has a mullet.) I'd say more about the Michelle situation but I know better.
  • Chris Edey is 5'9". Which is the same height as me (though I sort of hope I'm 5'10". My dad is tall. I really don't understand why I can't just be a little bit taller.) Much of the night was spent in disbelief about how short he looked until Ben asked him his height (before that Nat sent people up to stand beside him to see if he really was short or if he just looked short.) In the end Nat concluded he 'dresses short'. Whatever that means.
  • When I spoke to Edey he was done. I hope he made it home okay.
  • Did Rob's 'we shouldn't subsidize the bars' cost him the election?
  • What decided the election was the Feds profile. So many people I spoke to made their decisions *solely* based on those profiles.
  • Yes, yes, I am 'Matt Goyer'.
  • And yes, we can hook you up with your very own soapbox/weblog
