Sunday John left for Seattle. Monday John's movers came and we were given strict instructions about what was being moved. In the list of items was the futon from the living room. Now we do have a ratty old couch on the front porch. But it's exactly that. Ratty. So we contemplated a switchero.

Recently in John's comments Ben says:

The moving guys came by, we sent your futon and a couch down to you

To which John asks:

Uh, what couch?

Then recently in an email I reassured John we did in fact ship his futon and not the ratty couch. His reply:

Great. I just freaked when I read ben's comment that said they shipped "a couch" instead of my futon.
Consider yourself lucky John. We dreamed up a lot of moving practical pranks but chickened out of all of them.

Finally, I addressed the issue of how organizations can move to increase the number of women on their development teams. I used a great quote from Tom Melcher of there.com: "If you can build a place that women love, the guys will show up. The reverse is not true."
She also mentiones the book Unlocking the Clubhouse : Women in Computing which 'is a very readable description of how CMU went from 6% women in its undergraduate CS program to 40% by rethinking the way they looked for and evaluated candidates.'
