I went to the Mathsoc Feds Election Forum today (don't worry, I wasn't the only bored grad there, Snuggles was there too) and asked a bunch of lame questions (I was the one wearing the toque).

  • At the start the number of spectators equalled the number of candidates.
  • By the end the number of spectators was much less than the number of candidates.
  • Everyone introduced themselves. Thanks.
  • Absent: Brent Taylor
  • The strikeable fees issue was a big one last election but I haven't heard it mentioned this time around, so I brought it up. Muneeba said she was willing to investigate the strikeable fees. Jeff talked a bit about having strike days but I'm not feeling any strikeable fees love.
  • Muneeba seems to be much more supportive of online course evaluations than Jeff. I think Jeff thinks it's not worth the effort.
  • Snuggles called 'THC' on their ticket name and slogan. Will said it was a marketing gimmick and that they were not trying to make a joke of Feds.
  • I asked if 'THC' was all about Visbility, Accessibility and Communication then why are their posters so bare of platform information? And why don't they have info on how to contact them (i.e. website or email). Will responded that they were using 'a two prong approach' and that new posters would be put up soon. If their strategy has been a two prong one all along then I think it's a bad one.
  • I pressed Kevin on the Feds housing thing and was not impressed.
  • Muneeba seems to be a very internally focused while Jeff is very externally focused.
  • Jeff seems to be the most polished speaker though I think he comes off as being very political
  • I asked about Fed's historical failings in business management and both candidates had the typical answers. Though it worries me when Andrew talks about 'jobs for students'. While it is great that Feds provides jobs to students it should not be it's priority at all.
  • Everyone seemed to agree that it was bad that deregulated students paid more for arts/DE/... courses than arts/... students. I think this is an important issue that needs to be addressed.

In other Feds news I am very not impressed that David Capper resigned early.

Tomorrow I'm having lunch with CTV and Globe and Mail journalist David Akin. I'm also giving him a tour around campus and was wondering if you had any suggestions on campus highlights?

Tuesday, 8pm, Grad House

Tell your blogging friends and tell your readers.

Ryan Chen-Wing:

How good and how different will people be in person compared to in writing?

Update: Undergrads are welcome at the Grad House. Or so I think. I'm sure RCW would not have suggested it unless we were all welcome.
