At work I use Outlook 2003 and it's a huge improvement from Outlook 2002 so upgrade, it's worth it.

I'm tired of anonymous commenters.

Sorry guys, I'm tired of the anonymous commenters on this weblog. I could require some sort of login system but I'm too lazy to code it so please just respect my wishes and leave your name even if it's just your first name.

And yes, even though your comments have been anonymous I have been tracking IPs and occasionally put the effort into figuring out who you are.

Thanks.

Yesterday John and I went skiing at Steven's Pass. Just quickly:

Pros:

  • 1.5-2.5 hours from Seattle
  • No nonsense
  • Minimal lift lines
  • Night skiing. We could have skied till 10pm.

Cons:

  • Too warm! Yes, it was too warm because the snow was too melty.
  • Front side isn't steep enough

Lift ticket was $47USD.

Moveable Type kids.. Can you set it so that it displays your full post in your rss/rdf/whatever feed? I hate having to click through to read the full article. I can understand why advertising supported sites might require that functionality but it bugs me when I'm reading my friend's weblog.

Dave Winer:
People were choosing computer science as a career because they hoped to be the next Bill Gates, not because they wanted to work for Bill Gates.
This is in response to the NY Times article Microsoft, Amid Dwindling Interest, Talks Up Computing as a Career.

Read Scoble's response to Dave Winer.

I studied computer science because I wanted to be the next Bill Gates. Though for many reasons, which I'll write about in an upcoming post on why I joined Microsoft, I decided that the fastest route to Bill Gates like success would be to spend some time on the inside. It's worth knowing what you're going to be competing against.

So I agree with what Winer says above. I disagree with his statement that Microsoft is killing the talent pool or even discouraging the talent pool. Sure you could blame Microsoft for drying up the number of startups but you could equally blame the media, the analysts and venture capitalists responsible for blowing up and then bursting the bubble. Or you could blame the maturing state of the software industry.

I think right now it's all a matter of optics. There are a lot of exciting opportunities in computer science and there are a number of interesting start ups out there but we are just not hearing about them. Currently the media is obsessed with corporate scandals, layoffs, outsourcing and offshoring and is painting this big portrait of gloom and doom so it's no wonder people wouldn't want to work in this industry.

There's more I want to say about this but I have to go work for the man.

Does anyone who read this actually have a Media Center? Or has anyone tried one?

From The Waterloo Tech Digest which if you live/study/work in Waterloo you should be subscribed to.
* Matt Goyer, the former UW student from Winnipeg who founded Fairtunes (remember the website where you could donate money to the musicians whose work you downloaded?) has just moved to Seattle and been assimilated. He is now a program manager for Microsoft.
I wouldn't say I have been assimilated yet but we'll see :).
