Prof. Ragde reports that 12.7% of the incoming 2003 CS class is female (in the uw.mfcf.gripe cs452 thread).

I went to Phat Cat for dinner and got all excited about the new large free wi-fi zone but it didn't work! I was getting a really weak signal but couldn't get an IP. I then tried again from my car which was parked near Ginos and couldn't even get a weak signal there. Has anyone been able to connect?

BB goes gagga over Ian Clarke's latest project called 3d17:
Freenet creator Ian Clarke does interesting things with code on the weekends while the rest of us sleep/eat/watch the game. His latest is a large-scale collaborative document editing app.

We did this a few years ago with Emergent Music which allows collaborative editing of music recommendations and other users can vote on the edits. The difference being that EM identifies the best text editors and raters of edits so that we can highlight them as tastemakers (or whatever trendy Tipping Point word you want to use).

Yesterday after spending an hour trying to print a Word document in the Math building I was unsuccessful. Please consider I am three months away from completing a B.Math (Comp Sci) at Canada's best tech school. I used a variety of computers in a variety of labs. I also attempted to connect my notebook directly to the printers. NOTHING WORKED. I talked to MFCF and they were of no help. I don't know if the problem is a result of the MFCF split or what but it should not be this hard to print.

After an hour on my way to Kinkos where I was, at the time, wiling to pay $1000000000000s to print without hassle I stopped at the DC library. There I found computers running Windows! I didn't even have to login! I simply used my notebook to move my files onto the web and then browsed my way to my documents, viewed them, and printed them. I didn't even need to move money into some weird account; just swipped my Watcard.

Yesterday was my first experience printing on campus. It will also be my last. Instead of balking at a 15 minute walk home to my expensive network printer I will gladly walk because I know that I'd rather spend 30 minutes walking through the park than pulling my hair out in our math building which has the worst information systems deployed EVER.

So the Imprint,

  • University drops ball on food plan. Good that the Feds pushed that meal plan issue. Shame on the Admin for initially caving.
  • A fine day for fancy feathered birds. Why is this in our paper? Please keep out all international news, commentary on international news, features on people's vacations to resorts and articles about poultry shows.
  • Committee for new UW prez now forming. I'd like to see an Imprint article investigating whether we as students even want Johnston back for another term. I certainly don't hear much (positive or negative) about him.
  • The letters to the editor where the best part of this week's paper (note: Bomber = the white club). Read them all. Too bad the Opinion columnists aren't as good as these letter writers.
  • University Plaza shuts down TD Canada Trust ABM
  • There should have been an article about the launch of Canada's largest free wi-fi zone (there was an ad..).
  • 253 days till they're legal? Funny yes. Appropriate?

If you're bored read uw.mfcf.gripe. There is an interesting thread in which the inhabitants of one of the labs on campus is refusing to take down a poster.

So thanks to Aimee & Ian for hearing about it and Jam for scanning it. My mention in Management Information Systems: Managing the digital firm (Page 209).

Just goes to show that you shouldn't believe everything you read.
