Today our CS480 prof laughed off blogs as primarily student diaries since among other things they have not been written about in an academic context. Clearly she is not aware that:

  • There are over 1 million blogs
  • UW uses weblogs as a recruitment tool
  • A UW CS professor maintains a blog to explain course decisions
  • Harvard recently appointed a prominent blogger as a Berkman Fellow
  • Several top notch US schools have courses involving blogging
  • Increasingly weblogs are being used by corporations such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon,... as HR, PR, and internal communication tools
Anyhow, I now have to do a project on blogs out of spite. And if I wasn't so poor I would personally fly in an expert on blogging (well I do have lots of points... ?) just to prove that such experts not only exist but are too busy to write papers.

Of course the irony is that she won't be reading my paper since even for the most advanced undergrad courses there are TAs doing the marking.

In the last few days the Daily Bulletin has mentioned the new scholarships being established by CIBC. My beef is that to qualify for the upper year Math/CS $5000 scholarships you have to be a co-op student who has completed at least three work terms. Why discriminate against non-co-op students? Why shouldn't anyone who has completed at least 12 months of work be eligible?
