Knowing that many of you lurkers are highly opinionated individuals I'm curious to know what you guys think of this new proposed MBET. Will it be an innovative new program that produces leaders or is Waterloo starting a school to churn out higher quality managers for the it's corporate donors?

Update: I've received a 8 page draft Word document describing the program. However it's marked with 'limited distribution' all over it so I'm hesitant to post it online. So if you're interested in a copy drop me a line (mgoyer@fairtunes.com) and I'll fire you over a copy.

Here's a couple items from it.

  • Mission of the MBET: 'To help our graduates achieve exceptional accomplishments by providing the business skills that are critical to identifying and exploiting commercial opportunities'
  • On why there's demand: 'A December 2001 National Post/Compas study of CEO’s, leaders of small, medium and large corporations and among executives of the local and national Chambers of Commerce indicated wide scale dissatisfaction with MBA programs and the skills of their graduates.'
  • Has a section on what students can expect and what employeers can expect (which I find kind of funny since it's an entrepreneurship program).
  • Compares the MBET to an MBA
  • Discuss the curriculum but not the format in which it will be taught nor who it will be taught by
  • Still awaiting approval by the University Senate and OCGS

'Details on admission req'ts and registration deadlines will be available on the web site in a couple of months.' (Shocker)

Went and heard about the new MBET, Masters of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology program at the University of Waterloo from Howard Armitage the Director of the Centre for Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (that's right the center is so new that there's no website yet).

Anyhow, here are the details because obviously the University is too innovative to put em on the web:

  • $20,000, 12 month program beginning Spring term 2003
  • Admitting 35-50 students
  • Pre-req's: 78%+ average in an Honours Math, Engineering, or Science program
  • Part time program starting in 2+ years
  • Emphasis on overcoming the techno-managerial gap
  • Program being brought in for 3 reasons
    • 2 reports and Michael Porter say Canada isn't very competitive
    • The University has support for it
      • 'Innovation at Waterloo is alive and well'
      • 22% of University spinoffs in Canada come from Waterloo
      • Innovate Inc
    • We can do it well (b/c we're Waterloo)
  • 3 elective streams
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Management of Tech Entreprise
    • Business Technology
  • 2 term Commercialization Practicum where you work in small teams bringing a technology to market from one of the many companys in the area (for free)

If you have any questions or care to point out the oddity of Matt being interested in graduate studies comment away.

I was just involved in a car accident while on my way home from buying a book. No one was hurt but I'm a still a little shaken. (Look what happens when I venture out of the house during the work day!)

Basically someone in a large black Lexus in the lane beside mine tried to cut me off to get in a parking lot (the Plaza). I slammed on the brakes and barely avoided hitting them but they ended up front ending someone coming out of the parking lot as they avoided me. I gave the guy who got front ended my number in case it wasn't completely clear that the Lexus was at fault. Moral of the story: Check your blind spots before changing lanes and don't try and change lanes at the last possible moment.

The recycling people didn't take our recycling because we had placed a brick on top of each bundle to ensure they didn't blow away (it's very windy & cold today). In the past they haven't taken our recycling because I had placed papers in one bag and pop cans in another bag within the blue box.

I really don't understand why they're so picky. All I want to do is save the fucking environment!

And thanks to Jawn for uploading an album the other day to my ftp site. And in case you haven't guessed it people are desperate for the Men With Brooms soundtrack if anyone has a pre-release copy.

It's so hard to cut and paste between two computers: Oracle 8i Backup & Recovery guide (yes it's going to be a fun day).
