I hate spam. Who doesn't? CNET's running a story on the current state of spam. It mentions a few commercial efforts at reclaiming your inbox and I think I'm going to try out SpamKiller because I'm sure you'd rather I 'waste my time' blogging instead of tweaking my custom spam filters in Outlook which are about 10 clicks too many (per spam, and yes I counted).

(At the end of the day spam is a knowledge management problem.)

While the WayBack machine (archive.org) hasn't visited since the comments got installed (sometime in December (we're only talking two months here folks)) I will post this link to WayBack's first visit back on March 30th, 2001. Killer funny post at the top.

Looks like the Google cache is turning up absolutely nothing. You guys have any other ideas? Are there any other secret caches of information on the web that I can crawl to looking for your contributions to this meager project?

So we lost 314 comments. 2 months worth. If I promise never to do it again will you still comment? I've learned my lesson: Weekly backups, and never ever say something stupid so that you have to tinker by hand with SQL update statements (some days I hate to admit that I'm a Waterloo student..). The irony is that I wrote my own commenting system because I didn't trust the owners of other commenting systems to do so. Ah the irony!

How many quality lengthy threads did we lose? 2? 3? The B&J's one, the plaza discussion, the broken tail light,.. ? Please stop me from dwelling

Oh yeah, I'm still feeling awful. I thought a four hour layover in Boston would rest me up plenty but it obviously didn't (I whiled away the time crafting hate mail to the bank).

FYI: I'm in Portland.

It only took me an hour to get one song onto my brand spanking new iPod.

I'm not complaining as the requirements on the box specify Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X v10.1 and we all know my Dell Inspiron is definitely not running either :).

So it turns out my (brand new) firewire card doesn't supply 'enough' power.. Ebay giveth. Ebay taketh away. But only if I can find an alternative one that works. Well really I should sell my notebook on eBay and pick up a Mac..

Now that I've accomplished that it's time to see if any of your comments are lurking in the Wayback or Google's cache..

For all my friends who have just joined the world of bloggers I point you to Brad on the evolution of a blog:
The evolution of a blog (or journal...) is one of the most fascinating things. You start off rather shy, not really sure of what to say or how the page should look but are eager to give it a go. You have things to say and have found a forum for it. Slowly you move beyond "i ate a sandwich" to describing the sandwich and then finally to how sandwiches are destroying the world. Your thoughts move from simple to complex theories and along the way they rebound between the two extremes.

Last night I posted something completely in-appropriate and while I was tempted to remove the comment I didn't but I subsequently accidently erased not only my offensive comment but all of them (comments that is) while editing a response and explanation of my inappropriateness.

For saying something I didn't at all mean, I apologize. For erasing all that you guys have contributed to the site (314 comments) I also apologize. Maybe Google will save my ass and I'll be able to recover the lost comments. This would be the third time in a week I've been not so subtly been reminded that backing up like flossing is something that just needs to be done despite the discomfort.

One of these days I'll wake up and life while get back to normal.
