So one year eh!?

I really should thank all of you for showing up every day and reading whatever it is that I have to say. And sometimes you guys even write back! I'm also glad to see that so many of you have now started blogging. As for the rest of you... I've added you to the fav blogs list, now all you need is a blog.

Let's just say that I'm pleasantly surprised that it's been a year. Though I must admit that I wish I had begun blogging when we had started Fairtunes. In fact it was the day that Fairtunes got Slashdotted that I first heard of Dave's site. It turned out he was the second largest referrer (next to /.) and I even found time to talk to him on the phone that day. I went on to try out his thing called Radio but at the time it wasn't a blogging application. Or maybe deep down inside it was. Needless to say I re-visited it many months later and Radio is now a permanment fixture in my life.

While I know that I'd write even if you weren't reading I can't help but wonder what would happen if my writing had a sense of direction and focus. I mean this weblog is all about me and don't you ever get sick of that?

I wonder what a year of MG.com would look like in print? Would it be a hefty novel or a sickly thin magazine? Some part of me wants to be able to grab a year of Matt off the shelf and curl up by the fire but because weblogs are by their very nature highly hyperlinked documents they're just not conducive to being printed... Though I might not let that stop me.

Also, don't be afraid to drop me a line: mgoyer@fairtunes.com. I'm always looking for suggestions, criticisms, and/or abuse; anything to make this thing better! I also get lonely throughout the day so you know, cheer me up every once and a while. Or just bite back with a comment or two.

(Once this fever subsides regular programming will resume: I would have thought that being sick would have made it easier to waste the day away writing trivial entry after trivial entry but it appears that is not the case.)

Yesterday I read a lengthy but interesting article entitled, Friend or Foe which details a date rape case at Colorado State University. The implications for sex on campus are quite chilling.

Something I found particularly disconcerting was on page 5 where it describes how Mike was tried against CSU's student code where 'the test for determining guilt is merely "a preponderance of the evidence."' Or in other words 'If the hearing officer determines that there's at least a 51 percent chance that the accused student is guilty of a sex crime, then CSU's legal exposure almost requires that the student be booted out of school'. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a reason why criminal courts require beyond a reasonable doubt?

The article also mentions that CSU 'investigates about two dozen alleged sexual assaults every school year'. I wonder how this compares to Waterloo since our schools are approximately the same size?

It's now been a year. You can waste the day away and start at the beginning.

After just spending some time on my knees in the bathroom I think it's unlikely that I'll be writing that exam.
