Yesterday John went on a big building binge (and spending binge! ($150 in tools and wood)) and built an aparatus that he says is for doing chin-ups. Though we have our doubts and secretly believe it is for the love swing that he hides in his closet when not in use (buy a swing video, buy the swing!, buy a competing swing, read a comic about a sex swing).
Fortunately we have photos of the apparatus so we'll let you be the judge. And if you have a love swing we'd love to hear from you (contact@fairtunes.com reaches both of us). Photos! Terry Matthews spoke at our school today. I got two things out of the speech. The concept of overhang and the importance of technological advancements that necessitate the replacement of an installed base of products. There was also some blab about the UW Innovate Inc program and the Enterprise Co-op Program. Supposedly Enterprise Co-Op has been going for 3 years and has pumped through 25 people (though the program was only officially launched a year ago at an event John and I spoke at). They also claim that 8 of the people who did an 'enterpise co-op term' last term 3 are 'investment ready'. Qualifying individuals get up to a $6k grant from the school. Sounds fine and dandy but I'd just assume save $500 a term by not being in co-op thanks.
Search Results: So yes, to be clear. I think our university's efforts at making our school more 'entrepreneurial' are laughable and consist mainly of hot air.
Update:
From the Washington Post: Innovation Without Incubation and Colleges Promote Role as Incubators and Incubators' Vanishing Acts. RIM gets some competition: Handspring's new email/phone gizmo (I'm not sold on the flip thing as a speaker. I think hands free would be better) and Nokia's 5510 (weird keyboard config and small screen. But it does have an mp3 player).
In other news, Uprizer is now 'live'. The University of Waterloo has appeared to have launched something called Innovate Inc. a 'a novel approach to business pre-incubation within a university setting'. This happened a couple weeks ago but I seem to have just found out about it today. Though Innovate Inc. seems to consist of little more than a press release (links to a website (if it exists)would be appreciated).
Of course it seems as though our university has completely missed the boat because last time I checked the tech economy was enjoying a cozy nuclear winter and you can probably count the number of students who are launching new businesses on one hand. Never mind that a private company started by UW alumni tried to do their own UW fed incubator and last time I checked, failed.
