BB, Canada's DMCA proposal: not great, could be LOTS worse

For a while I tried very hard to be a registered objector of the Canadian DMCA but you had to practically be a lawyer in able to respond to all the different motions and what not.

My mom sends me lots of emails about living wills. In the event I don't sign one you can hold the doctors to this: If I'm ever a vegetable please pull the plug. (And then please drop me in one of those cyro freezers for when they figure out how to un-vegetablize me).

Thanks!

To read, Canadian Business, The real deal:
Two new university programs give budding entrepreneurs a chance at their really big break.

When asked who I look up to as a role model, I never really had an answer. Now I do.

CNET, Mark Cuban to finance Grokster defense.

When I grow up, I want to be like Mark Cuban. Why? He's a rich billionaire entrepreneur blogger who owns disruptive technology and entertainment companies and isn't afraid to take on the bad guys.

You may have noticed I'm not blogging much. I highly suspect it's the 55+ hour work weeks and excessive drinking on the weekends to erase the memory of the 'worst week ever' (awkward moniker since every week seems to compete for it). Though if it's not that I think the best thing to get me back on track is to blog about mundane things. Hopefully that will get the writting flowing and I can slowly creep some quality posts back in.

We're flirting with the idea of ditching our apartments for one house. Houses on the hill are pretty rare and so we jumped on the opportunity to tour a 4 bedroom, 3000 sq foot house on the Hill.

Pros:

  • Benny, Matt, Ming save $200 each a month
  • Matt, driveway for boat (saving $50 a month)
  • Free parking
  • BBQ
  • Backyard and frontyard
  • Possibility for hot tub rental (or purchase)
  • Better cable and Internet providers
  • Gas stove
  • Free laundry
  • Fruit trees and garden
  • Lots of storage
  • Sun room
  • More square feet
  • Ming, close to volunteer park
  • Cheaper bills
  • Cleaning service is more affordable
  • Loud music and surround sound for movie watching
  • Paintable
  • Ming likes to cook for everyone
  • Fireplace

Cons:

  • Further from favorite bar
  • John, costs $200 more a month
  • Longer commute to work
  • Ming, far from his coffee girl
  • No view
  • Far from some restaurants
  • Noise between rooms
  • Benny and Matt: Not as nice as our apartment
  • 2 bathrooms for 4 people
  • More inbreeding
  • Benny, more isolating living in a home
  • Old house, potential problems

While pretty nice, doubtful that it is compelling enough to leave our current place.

Scoble, My video rant for the day:
Don't think Microsoft is blameless here. Our encoding tools are WAY too complex. Windows Media Encoder is free, yes, but you almost need a computer science degree to use it.
Ugh, I have a computer science degree and work on a media product at Microsoft and I still can't get our encoding tools to work!

Let's just say that there is a lot of opportunity in the video space.

Ed Bott reports on the sorry state of the FCC and their stance on 'indency', The American Taliban wants to pull the plug on your cable TV:
None of this stuff is very complicated. If you don't want cable coming into your home, don't subscribe. If you think the airwaves are filled with filth, turn off your TV, or throw it away. If you want to block particular channels, block them. It's very easy. But don't tell me what I can or can't watch in the privacy of my own home.

The conservative right drives me crazy!
