One downside to a fire escape BBQ is that it attracts the cat whose owners let out onto the fire escape.

I spent the afternoon in security training studying code fragments for buffer and integer overflows, essentially being reminded why I am not a programmer and do not consider myself a geek.

Fast forward to ten minutes ago when I successfully recovered a deleted NTFS volume by hand and did a dance in the dining room; I guess there is still a bit of geek left in me.

To update my first post on this issue. I've found that the best article to read is Recovering NTFS Boot Sector on NTFS Partitions. The utility, dskprobe.exe, can be found on your XP install disk. I had tried downloading a few free recovery utilities but none of them did the trick. In the end I followed the instructions and was able to do it by hand. The trickiest part is making sure you know how to use dskprobe. I also found it helped to practice locating the primary and backup NTFS boot sectors on a known working partition first.
