I went sailing tonight on Lake Union with Mark from work on an Ultimate 20. Lake Union is a small little lake in the middle of downtown Seattle and was absolutely jam packed with sailboats. It's so jam packed that just as the race was starting a big cargo type boat went through and took out the windward mark and we had to race around an invisible mark.

Afterwards I got a peak at houseboat culture since our boat is tied up to the owners houseboat.

A few more links on the Microsoft ESPP cutback:

Seattle PI, Microsoft Notebook: Company stands by cuts in benefits:

But despite the employee reaction to the latest announcement, the company doesn't plan to reconsider its plans, he said. He cited the work that led to the decision, including market research, employee focus groups, surveys and other measures.

See also the follow-up blog post to the above.

Something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is that perhaps Microsoft is cutting the benefits because of a change in accounting rules. From a Mercury News article, Tech firms racing clock in bid to stop options rule:

But the proposed rule also would force companies to expense employee stock purchase plans, or ESPPs, that allow workers to buy company stock at a discount.

If you think we are spoiled brats then read, The Seattle Times article, Microsofties don't get sympathy:

So I am shedding no tears for the folks at Microsoft, who are up in arms over the company's decision to cut benefits to its workers and make changes in an employee stock-purchasing plan that will save the company $60 million.

No tears not only because I have to buy my own tissues, but because I live in the real world, far from the Xanadu all that code has created.

Cancel your cable subscription :).

Ray Slakinski, Nucleus 1.0 Released!:

Nucleus will download a specified RSS file, and look for .torrent files that match any of the specified keywords. If a match is found it will queue up that file for download. After it has gone through the entire RSS file it will download each file 1 at a time. If no matches are found the program will just simply exit.
