Chris on Microsoft security: We Don't Need No Stinking Badges.

The first thing my office mate pointed out to me when he returned from vacation, to find I had envaded his office, was that I wasn't wearing my badges like the cool kids do. My badge is no longer on my belt.

The second thing my office mate pointed out was that our office had fluorescent lights and could we please have a lighting policy? Since I'm flexible I agreed that we would leave them off and use our floor lamp. Though as it turns out, no one uses their fluorescent lights, so why are they installed in the first place?

On the topic of security my office mate refers to Microsoft parking tags as 'key me tags' and recommends hiding your parking pass when not parked on campus. This really isn't a concern with the Neon :).

My beater Neon arrives Friday morning to Building 50. Turns out there are a few Neons sprinkled amongst the Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes, Hummers and SUVs in our overcrowded parking lot at work so it won't feel so alone. Though truth be told I'm hoping to either bus it or carpool with my office mate who lives across the street from me.

I'm signing my lease and getting the keys to my kickass apartment Tuesday at 6pm.

What's up at work?

  • I called the first feature team meeting for one of my features and we're now doing work.
  • I sent out my first wide distribution, action required, slightly disruptive email.
  • I got a Toshiba m200 Tablet PC. Yay digital inking.
  • Sandwiches are $3.25-$3.50. I don't think I'll be bringing a lunch as I planned.
  • I'm a 7up drinker but while we have Coke and Pepsi we only have Sprite
  • There is no premium OJ. Only tiny 5 ounce cans of from concentrate stuff.

I know some readers and friends are moving to the Seattle area and I have some advice: Do not move to Redmond.

After two weeks I'm going crazy. Do not be swayed by the commuting argument.

  • Do you really want to live so close to work that you can just drop by after dinner or on the weekend?
  • Do you really want to spend $80 on cabs to go out on a Friday?
  • Do you think the person you pick up will want to come back to Redmond?
  • Do you really want to sit on your couch every week night and watch bad cable TV?
  • Do you want your idea of a cultured night out to be visiting a suburban mall or a megaplex movie theater?
  • Do you really want to buy a car? ...Even though you are 'so close' it's an illusion because this is suburbia. You can't walk anywhere and I hear that busing around Redmond sucks.

I'm a very going out person and while in Redmond I've only gone to Seattle on Friday and Saturday. And since I like to drink it means I have to crash at John's since cabbing back is prohibitively expensive.

We already lost Mira to Redmond, we do not want to lose any more.
