I think we're out.

Just talked to Ming, he is on his way. Sounds like power is still out in Guelph.

And it sounds like Detroit is backed up only for people from America coming to Canada.

Update: Site with border wait times. Great!

Just went to the bank and bought a magazine. Everything is open. Everything is normal.

The mail even got delivered.

Got in touch with Ming. His cell phone semi-works, his home phone doesn't. He says many gas stations are closed and that the border might be closed. Does anyone know if the border at Detroit is open? I suggested we could go through at the Sault instead..

Where's Ming? We have to drive to Seattle. We were supposed to leave hours ago.

My cell phone isn't working today. (It worked last night).

Most amazing power outage ever. 11 hours of crazyness. Once in a life time. It was like the end of the world. To 'celebrate' we had a hydro party across the street (and the by-law officers came by at like seven o'clock to bust up our drinking sign, meanwhile the streets were pure anarchy).

So what's everyone's story? Did you have a good time?

Mine is...

At 4:15ish the power went off here and I went outside to see if something had blown on the street (something blew last summer) only to find all my neighbors out in the streets checking to see just how big the outage was. Seeing as I was supposed to meet Robin at 4:30 to go shopping for hockey equipment at the Math building I hopped in the car thinking only our street was going to be affected but all the traffic lights were out and it was chaos in the streets. It's like everyone forgot how to drive. I eventually get to the Math building, pick up Robin, and then we head back to his place because it was senseless trying to drive anywhere.

At his place I fire up the BBQ and warm up some leftover pizza and we sit staring at a blank TV till Jonny gets home. Once he settles in we crack open Risk and play that for an hour. Figuring the power must be coming on soon I head back home (the streets were now deserted) to hopefully do all my chores and errands involving power. When I get home the new roommate's boyfriend is cooking away on the stove which had me puzzled for a second till I realized that of course the gas and water still work, but there's still no power so I pack and clean out the furance room.

With everything done that I can do, and frustrated that I can't listen to music since my speakers aren't battery powered, I head over to the neighbors who are having a hydro party complete with car playing tunes and a 'you honk, we drink' sign. At around 7:30 the by-law guy comes by and gives us a stern warning for violating the no-unlicensed a-frame type signs in downtown Waterloo by-law and for disturbing the peace. After dealing with us he had to head down the street to deal with the other (larger) drinking party who had the sign 'honk if you blame Bush' up on a white sheet (is there a no-sheet by-law too?). Needless to say this was all odd since we heard some drunk student was directing traffic at Westmount and Erb.

So we partied it up, BBQ'd, watched the convenience store beside us make a killing selling ice and icecream (we scored some free icecream later in the night). Eventually the Math boys showed up, but by then the neighbors were pretty much done. It was pretty cool sitting on one of Waterloo's busier streets with no lights on watching the moon rise.

After the math boys left I headed to another party just down the street were there was much drunken craziness till the wee hours of the morning.

I came back home, found a stranger sleeping in our living room and tried to find my camera since I had it earlier in the night but couldn't find it now. I completely panicked and went outside to try and find it. The power finally came on but I still couldn't find it. I eventually gave up and tried to sleep having resigned myself to buying a new one but of course once I woke up and there it was in the kitchen where I swear I had looked.

All in all it was an amazing night. We need power outages more often to force us to just sit down and enjoy it all and remind us just how overly dependent on electricity we are.
