Ming on Bloggers @ UW:
Somethings I noticed:

  • Out of the 10 bloggers, 8 are female. Hardly the ratios you'd see at UW.
  • 3 1/2 are in AHS, 1 in Engineering, 2 in Arts, 1 in Science, 1 in ES, and 1 1/2 in Math. So all the faculties are covered, but again not in the correct ratios.
  • 7 people started their latest entry with some sort of "Hey", "Hello", or "Hi Everyone". Which to me, makes it sound less like a journal, and more like a newsletter.

Well, at least they're trying something new.

  • Yes, but had you known the true ratios before coming to Waterloo would you have still come?

The school should lend a digital camera to those UW Bloggers. Text is great and all but I think they could have some fun with some photos.

I wish my blogging tool supported tags like <amazon>This amazing book</amazon> or <imdb>This amazing movie</imdb>. It'd then auto-generate direct links to those items (with my associate/referral id embedded in).

Computers are supposed to make our lives easier..

I guess I should just shutup and write such a tool but I'm lazy; that's why I want it.

I was disappointed to learn today that UW Athletics is cancelling our twice weekly pickup hockey so that they can cram more kid's hockey camps in for the rest of July and August.

    I hate Sun Solaris products!

I spent all morning trying to use their PatchPro product. The documentation sucks and it didn't work (it told me the patches I needed, downloaded them, validated them, and didn't install them!). Now I'm using their recommended cluster package and just got this message:

*WARNING* SYSTEMS WITH LIMITED DISK SPACE SHOULD *NOT* INSTALL PATCHES:
With or without using the save option, the patch installation process will still require some amount of disk space. [cut]. Check and be sure adequate disk space is available before continuing.

Are you ready to continue with install? [y/n]: y
Determining if sufficient save space exists...
    Sufficient save space exists, continuing...

So, it tells me to check and I read that thinking, 'wow, how hard would it be for them to just check for me?' and then it goes ahead and does that. So why get me to check if it's just going to check?

My other beef is that we're going to be installing SunScreen Lite 3.1 which is a free download from Sun (the full version is $15k) but to remotely administer the software you need to buy a $149 VPN package which takes 13 business days to ship if you live in the US and 2-3 weeks if you live in Canada. Why can't I download it!? So I guess we'll be using the commandline..

But Sun is a large company. Why can't they:

    • Provide comprehensive, yet short, easy to understand documentation
    • Make their software easy to use and provide some indication of when things go wrong
    • Allow you to *download* software that you've purchased from their site.

The real question is: Why aren't we running Linux?

Because I finally got afraid of getting lap cancer I've moved my notebook onto my desk and now I've been looking for a keyboard with integrated track point/pointing stick/nipple/... IBM has a nice spacesaver one that is just what I want but it's $75-150USD! (Depending where you buy it.) When I can buy just a plain old crappy keyboard for $5 it's hard to justify spending that kind of money on a keyboard.

There are some on eBay if I can get them for the right price.

Buy.com has launched BuyMusic. Requires IE, Windows Media 9, and an 'American' IP address. Tracks are $0.79+.

Doesn't work with iPods/Winamp so I will not be using it.

I caved and subscribed to the Sunday New York Times (since it's $3 cheaper an issue than buying it at Chapters).
