Off to Winnipeg.

The RIAA ran an ad today in the New York Times. It included this bit:
Here are the facts: stealing music over the Internet is no different than shoplifting CDs out of a record store.

That is one suspect statement.

EFF: Tired of Being Treated Like a Criminal?

They even link to the original digital patronage/tip jar/voluntary payment site, Fairtunes.

I've been posting to Pho about this RIAA fiasco. My final thoughts are:

It's an arms race. 5 companies and 1 lobby organization are pitted against 57 million Americans.

My money is on the 57 million Americans.

Many of you have complained that all I do is bitch here. Well when the major companies in my life decide to do something the way it should be done you'll be the first to know.

Remember how I lost my credit card?

Well on May 27th Rogers tried to charge my now lost card. The charge did not go through. On the 29th I received my new card and changed my credit card on file at Rogers. Today (the 26th) I get a notice in the mail that I owe them a lot of money + interest for not paying on the 27th. I call and get stuck in automated hell and then call a different number. I ask why we're having all these problems since I updated my credit card as soon as I could. She explained another charge would go through on June 27th for last month plus this months plus a late fee. I questioned the late fee and she said they had to charge me. Which I explained did not make sense since I provided them with a new card number two days after the failed billing so if I were to charged interest it should only be for being two days late not thirty one days. We argued back and forth and she finally credit my account (but it was a one time credit, don't expect this kind of nice treatment again (even though my Rogers bill is about $200/month!).

Yesterday I deposited a cheque drawn from one of my accounts into Natalie's account at TD. They put a few business day hold on it even though Canadian cheques clear OVERNIGHT.

Update: Nat called and asked them to remove the hold since the cheque has cleared. Here's what Nat told me of their conversation:

Because they don't know from the clearing house that it's cleared and they won't know for 5 business days. They talked to the teller who talked to you, and s/he said that they told you that if you brought in a certified cheque it would clear right away but that they didn't tell you they could release the hold.

The whole it takes 5 business days for the clearing house to tell them a cheque has cleared is bullshit.
