Gord Downie's music video for Chancellor, filmed on Toronto's Centre Island, which is where Natalie and I went last weekend on Sunday is now online. But more on what we did on Centre Island. We had brought our bikes and biked around the island. We even ended up at the nude beach (90% male) but had no towel to sit on and so we postponed it for another weekend when hopefully we'll be better prepared (who knew you had to be prepared to go skinny dipping?) On the Saturday it was Caribana which is supposedly bigger than Pride but not nearly as well organized. We didn't see the parade but we did see the grid-lock. What grid-lock you ask? Well for 3 days Yonge Street was an un-moving wasteland of SUV's driven up from the States. And we ain't talking about Explorers. We're talking about real SUV's like Excursions, Navigators, and Escalades. The other vehicle of choice were Cadillac sedans. And we're not talking about entry models for these vehicles either. These were the top of the line ones with flat screen video panels in the head rests for the in-dash DVD player. But the weird thing was that these were young 20 something black drivers! I thought I was well paid but I certainly can't afford a $75k SUV. So if anyone can explain this demographic to me (and Mark, John, and Nat) we'd appreciate it. Also explaining the whole young black guys being attracted to big ass Caddy's would be nice. I mean I associate Cadillac's with like fat oil men (the stereotypes just keep on coming..) not young hipsters. Those not riding on the hoods of their SUV's or drinking Coronas (check out their age verification method) while driving were lining the streets with video cameras. Every other person had a video camera even though there was nothing to film but other people with video cameras. There were also lots of cops lining the streets with their riot helmets strapped to their belts issuing tickets to those riding on the roofs and hoods of the SUVs and emptying all the open alcohol being consumed.
All in all. Pretty crazy. Don't worry Jonathan rescued me and we went for lunch (after I had gone out and bought pizza and brought it home). It's my birthday and there is no one here to take me out to lunch! :( It's my birthday today. Woo hoo! :) Thanks for all the email and ICQ greetz. I'll be expecting FedEx (a paid for, sponsored link) to be delivering all your presents shortly. I don't really remember what happened August 10th last year except I went to bed at 4 or 5 am because I do remember being rudely awakened at 9am on the 11th by my girlfriend because we had just been Slashdotted and our server had just crashed. Aug 11 was a long day. We never officially launched so I sort of consider the 11th to be our launch day. The day we had all been dreaming of. That's right, our name on the front page of the geekiest website in the world.
Actually I think we went out to dinner with my Mom and sisters who bought me Cryptonomicon, a great book that took me forever to get around to reading since my life was a blur.
