Boat is out of the water

Saturday I bought Rob’s 1993 Land Cruiser and depleted his stock of LandCruisers down to 2. Fortunately the Bank Of Rob has not discontinued their liar loan sub prime products and I was able to use creative financing to get the deal done. Thanks Rob!

Anyone want to buy a beat up about to fall apart Neon that is currently lost in Wedgewood? :)

Saturday night we supported local hockey by watching the T-Birds win 6-4 and then supported the arts and Shunpike by drinking at LoFi:

Sunday with lots of help from Ming I took my boat of the water:

IMGP4941

We had fun figuring out how to get the tow hitch installed, breaking and entering into a boat launch and getting lost in Bothell/Kirkland.

Anyone want to buy a 1998 MasterCraft Maristar?

A note on SUV ownership: I worry about owning a gas guzzling SUV and plan to assuage my guilt by first of all not driving it to work. Fortunately I live close enough that I can bike to work in five minutes, walk in twenty minutes or catch a bus that stops a block away. Secondly, I plan to buy some carbon offsets for the few miles I will put on the vehicle driving to the ski hill.

Boat is out of the water

In a rush, I took the boat out over the weekend because Mark was vacating his apartment. In case you’re wondering, this is what a wakeboard boat costs:

$100/year for new fenders and lines

$120/year for registration

$120/year to put in the water and take it out

$500/year in required maintenance

$550/year for insurance

$900/year for trailer storage

$1200/year for moorage

Plus $40-50 every time you go wakeboarding.

Which I guess is probably like $85/hour not counting the expense of the boat, financing, depreciation and toys.

Needless to say I’m seriously reconsidering this sport since I went wakeboarding less than 10 times this year. But, don’t get me wrong, I love owning a wakeboard boat. Now if only there was a fractional boat ownership program out there. Or a web 2.0 site that manages both the cost sharing (ala Billmonk) and the time sharing of a shared asset like a boat, or sports car, or high end downhill mountain bike.

If you’re in Seattle and interested in fractional boat ownership drop me a line. Maybe I’ll put together something next spring.

This past weekend

Busy weekend!

After sneaking away early Friday I had dry land practice for the J24 Districts, the I rushed over to check out Hump 2. We even made the Stranger’s blog, HUMP 2 Storms Seattle!, or, at least my ass did.

Then Saturday and Sunday I had two days of racing:

And yet another picture of my ass…

Sunday afternoon the wind died so I spent the afternoon on the motorboat relaxing and then went to Daniel’s (by boat of course) with Kristi.

Friday we drank and drank.

Opening Day

Friday evening after weeks of phone calls back and forth with my dealer/service shop, I got my boat back after adding a dual battery, spring tune up, new blower, new bilge exhaust pipes, fixed trailer wiring, hull cleaning and wiring changes to my speaker setup. It really is a hole in the water that I pour money in to! Unfortunately though getting work done on it is like pulling teeth. This boat service shop really could learn from car service shops, where you take your care in for an oil change and they recommend $1000 worth of repairs. Not with my boat. I take it in for an oil change and they don’t do any of the work I request! It’s crazy.

Anyhow, Saturday, was Opening Day of boating season and even though the weather was crap we headed out for a few hours of floating around and watching the parade:

Truth be told, the boat parade was a bit boring. However, there was the occasional boat that did get dressed up:

Moorage on Lake Washington

Perhaps I left calling too late, but by the time I called my moorage place on Portage Bay on Lake Union last weekend all they had left were three 40′ slips costing around $1600/summer. This sent me off the deep end, but I fortunately then found a covered slip on Portage Bay for $1200/summer that was more my size. But even better was the email I got from a friend and co-worker who is moving to an apartment on Lake Washington which happens to have slips available. Today we struck a deal to store my boat there for the summer. I’m a little worried about the rougher water and the long commute to get to the on-the-water restaurants, but it’s ideal for wakeboarding. Needless to say I can’t wait to drop it in after I get back from skiing the first week in May!
