Boston.com, On campuses, handhelds replacing raised hands (via Gizmodo)
Hoping to make large classes more interactive, a growing number of professors on large campuses are requiring students to buy wireless, handheld transmitters that give teachers instant feedback on whether they understand the lesson -- or whether they're even there.

One Great City by The Weakerthans [download].
Late afternoon, another day is nearly done
A darker grey is breaking through a lighter one
A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
That hollow hurried sound
Of feet on polished floor
And in the dollar store
The clerk is closing up
And counting Loonies trying not to say
"I hate Winnipeg"

The driver checks the mirror seven minutes late
The crowded rider's restlessness annunciates
The Guess Who sucked The Jets were lousy anyway
The same route everyday
And in the turning lane
Someone stalled again
He's talking to himself
And hears the price of gas repeat his phrase
"I hate Winnipeg"

And up above us all
Leaning into sky
A golden business boy
Will watch the north end die
And sing "I love this town"
Then let his arching wrecking ball proclaim
"I....hate....Winnipeg"
I....Love....Winnipeg.

UW has the worst sign up system for instructional programs:

  1. Line up starting at 7am to pick up a time card
  2. Return at time on card
  3. Line up again
  4. Find out your program is full

Why not have a web system whereby everyone has until an advertised time and date to register themselves as being interested in a program. Then organizers can increase or decrease capacity for programs based upon demand. And for programs where demand exceeds supply they would then use a lottery system to assign spots.
