McGill: within the next 12 months, the university's hot spot count will be at 1,000.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. Canada's most innovative university really isn't.

How many hotspots do we have now? <25?

  • There's no wireless in 2 of the 3 main undergrad math/cs labs making it hard for us notebookers to work with those without.
  • There's no wireless in the student life areas.
  • One of the residences had to use a 3rd party supplier for their wireless' connection to the internet because the university wouldn't co-operate

If I had a million dollars I'd donate it to the school so they could deploy more access points and put Aeron chairs in our labs. Of course I don't have a million dollars and when I do I'll probably be so bitter about my undergrad education that instead I'll donate the money to [insert name of a UW competitor here].

Just reading over my travel journals for John's sister. Lots of good quotes here (one day they'll be online with the pictures).
Anonimity. I hate it. I also can't spell it.

Recently Clay Shirky wrote an interesting article entitled, The Music Business and the Big Flip in which he talks about how the first (think digital editing) and last thirds (think p2p file sharing) of the music industry have been transformed by technology but the middle has been left untouched (think how do the masses find out about new music).

We believe the problem he describes is the one solved by Emergent Music. And that is effectively a music filter. Unfortunately though we haven't been able to grow Emergent Music to the level of traffic it needs to produce effective recommendations. Like Metafilter, I hope that one day soon EM will reach it's tipping point (interestingly enough, Sportsfilter hasn't yet hit its tipping point).

And yes, we've fixed the points problem that was plaguing the site for a few weeks (we refactored our DB scheme since our initial one was pretty bad).

Here's my second essay for CS492: Don't Surrender. Don't Resist. It examines two essays about the 'electronic hive' and argues that we should not surrender to technology as suggested by Kevin Kelly nor should we resist it like Sven Birkerts suggests. Instead we should control and embrace technology.

My third CS492 essay is on electronic monitoring in the workplace. Does anyone have any good stories of being spied on by their bosses?

So it's been a week since the bar shutdown/takeover and there's been no new news. What the hell is going on? Why isn't Feds keeping us up to date??

Two cool items in this month's Wired.

  1. WiFi car stereo. Now this is something I've been talking about for about a year. Very cool to see one on the market (more info).
  2. Aeron like seat for your bike.

In the SF Gate article, Oakland police no match for street mayhem some guy said:
I ain't gonna lie -- if we had won, we would have done the same thing, but milder.

What is wrong with these people? How does winning or losing equate to rioting in the streets?

Superbowl carnage: Last night after the game I forgot my backpack in the car so all the beer I didn't drink froze. So did my salsa but I'm sure it'll thaw.

But what's almost as depressing as the lost beer ($6 worth) is that my iPod has no charge so I'll be tuneless at the gym (why doesn't it come with a removable battery!?). That's right, I'm back into the gym routine (take that Maeve!). My reason for getting sucked back into my scam-o-ram gym is that I want to play more hockey (I'm playing about 3 times a week) and to play more hockey I need better cardio...
