From the NY Times, Three Stars of 'Seinfeld' Boycott a DVD Deal (though this article is already out of date, read also: A 'Seinfeld' Star Will Do the DVD but Asks for Pay).

I am excited that Seinfeld is coming out on DVD, though I have often wondered why it has taken this long. This quote from a SVP tells us why:

"It's never been just about the episodes; it's really about the value added," said Fritz Friedman, a senior vice president at Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. "That's what takes so much time. That's why so much is up in the air — the concept, the taping, the schedules of people involved. Fans complain if we release bare-bones product. On something like `Seinfeld,' people won't be happy if we just put the episodes on there."

Do the thoughts of this SVP really represent the thoughts of consumers? I would have gladly bought a Seinfeld DVD set years ago even if it were just the episodes with no 'valud added'. It's not as if you watch the 'value added' bits over and over. I know that if I as a consumer were the given the choice of getting Seinfeld DVDs years ago versus waiting forever and getting both the episodes and the value added I would have chosen the episodes. But perhaps my thinking doesn't represent the thinking of other DVD watchers.

Or, why not immediately release the episodes and then later on release a 'value added' as it's own release seperate from the episodes?

The behavior of the entertainment industry just plain baffles me because I see them as being unresponsive to consumer demand and being unresponsive to demand means leaving money on the table which when their industry is supposedly faltering is down right stupid.

First Monday: Internet gift economies
The Internet today is a mix of the ‘free and the fee’, though it still remains in part a gift economy. Personal and organisational sharing of free information, products and software continues to flourish as a circle of gifts for returned intangible reward. Though a perceived lack of these rewards, due in part to an inability to quantify them, has resulted in givers seeking more for their efforts. What are their revised motivations? What now are their rewards?

What's up Winnipeg?

Is anyone up for skating at the Forks either this afternoon or tomorrow?

Plans for the rest of the week: Sunday I'm going skiing at Frost Fire and Monday a large group of of us are going to the Moose game.
