So we've been sitting around Waterloo for a week now. We've watched a lot of TV, eaten a lot of food, John's written a lot of code (he left today for Montreal..) and I think we have finally reached our breaking point.

Someone on Pho pointed out that it'd be costly to fill up an iPod with Apple's new service. Consider the new 30 gig version:

7500 songs * $0.99 a song = $7425USD

Yikes!

CNET: Apple's music: Evolution, not revolution.

People said the same thing about the iPod but over a year later the iPod is still the benchmark standard.

I've been asked by a few people to comment (you must all forget that Fairtunes was a flop and I know nothing about digital music) on the big announcement from Apple today about their new music service coupled with iTunes. I of course have not tried it out (I don't have a credit card with a US billing address (are they also doing IP blocking?) and I don't have an Apple computer) but from what I've read (both articles and emails) it sounds like it is going to be pretty solid.

However four things bother me:

  • Hard to compete with free. They only have 200,000 tracks while on KaZaa there is over 1,000,000,000 files. Conservative estimates of music tracks is probably 500,000+. I believe that someone needs to form some sort of independent organization (the 'sixth' label) that would enable indies to easily get their music on these types of services.
  • $0.99 is way too much. We need to see something sub $0.25.
  • Where's the windows version? Apple makes their money on hardward so it is understandable that they're trying to lure people to their hardware by restricting their software to only their hardware. But some of us will never switch (while I'm tempted their notebooks are too beefy).
  • Disclosure. How much are the artists getting?

What do I think they're doing right?

  • Kick ass software.
  • You can burn tracks.
  • Tracks are portable to your (Mac) iPod and (3) other Mac computers.

What would I still like to see them do?

  • Windows version of iTunes.
  • Web Services. Sure their software is great but they need to open up their API. Something akin to the Google and Amazon APIs. I bet people would come up with some really cool apps leveraging that technology.
  • Movies. Maybe then I'd by an Apple notebook.. ..We don't have HBO so we're watching season three of Six Feet Under by downloading it from KaZaa and mixing it into our TV (using a combo of s-video, rca, and co-axial cables).

iPod sidenote: I'm also curious as to why they decided to move the buttons on the iPod. They seemed to be well placed on the first and second generation models.
