Popdex citations thinks I linked to Caring for your Introvert. I don't think I ever did. Weird.

I was at the student forum about the lawsuit and was blogging it but my notebook crashed because I really need a new wireless card.

Anyhow, it was under an hour, featured four uniformed police officers, one camera crew from CKCO/CTV, and three speakers (Brenda, Chris, and Jerry Levitan, the Feds' lawyer (he wrote 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Winning Everyday Legal Hassles in Canada', he must be good! :) )).

This is what I took away:

  • The admin knew this lawsuit was coming
  • The $11 million number was chosen because combined Bomber and Feds will be losing $2 million a year in revenue and if our bars are shut down forever then they need to pick a dollar amount to represent such a long term closure
  • While the admin says this is all about safety it's really about how they were inviolation of the liquor license laws by having Feds a separate corporation serving 80% of the alcohol on campus
  • Admin has not been open at all to discussing the issues with Feds
  • Feds want either their own liquor license or to be a joint holder of a liquor license with admin. Eight other universities in Ontario either have their own liquor license or are joint with their admins. Why doesn't UW admin feel that we are just as responsible as those other universities?
  • It really sounds like Feds had no other options if in fact discussions have been at a stand still
  • I'm puzzled as to why admin thinks that having off campus bars run by organizations who value profit more than their service to students would do a better job than a Feds run bar.
  • If an agreement were reached it would take 2-3 months for the bars to open.

Globe and Mail: Students suing University of Waterloo

Adminstration press release (funny it's not on their News Bureau page yet).

I think the university has forgotten that we, the students, are their customers, and we the customers, want our own bar.

It's cheaper to get a (student) subcription to the paper version of the Globe and Mail than it is to subscribe to the online version of the Kitchener-Waterloo paper, The Record. There's also no difference in price between the paper and online versions of The Record.

Breaking news: Our student federation is suing our university for $11 million! (press release)
The Federation alleges that the University, as the holder of the liquor licence for Federation Hall and The Bombshelter Pub, has been in non-compliance with the Liquor Licence Act for many years by contracting out the sale and service of liquor.

The list of claims is long:

The Federation is seeking damages on a number of grounds, including negligence, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of trust, negligent misstatement and misrepresentation, trespass, conversion, unjust enrichment and intentional interference by the University in their economic relations.

My only reaction right now is that this is going to cost students *a lot* of money; our money goes to both these parties and we'll be funding both of their teams.

I was thinking of covering some aspect of blogging for my next CS492 assignment (I feel a bit like deviating from the set assignment specification) and I'm wondering if anyone knows of *any* academic papers on weblogging?
