My notebooks power adapter was pretty flakey last week and on Friday it finally got too much for me and I gave the end that plugs into the notebook a close inspection and discovered that the cable was severed! So I called Dell who shipped me a new one but it doesn't arrive till Monday so Friday afternoon with 2 hours of battery of life left I spliced the end back on (which was a trick since it broke right at the end) but it seems that my splice job has shorted something in the transformer brick and so I have two hours of life left to last me till the Purolator truck arrives sometime Monday...

So till then!

Wired: Anti-Copy Bill Slams Coders

No more than two years and seven months after the bill becomes law, the only code programmers and software firms will be able to distribute must have embedded copy-protection schemes approved by the federal government.

From the intro of the bill:

The lack of high quality digital content continues to hinder consumer adoption of broadband Internet service and digital television products.

Contrast with the Economist: 300,000-500,000 feature films are already being downloaded daily.

So basically the traditional media industries are scared shitless and instead of providing customers with what they want (content) they want to throw them in jail by criminalizing one of technology's most basic building blocks (copying).

Bizarre. But of course it's not a coincidence that Senator Holling's second largest campaign contributor is the media industry.
