Today is the last day for the Microsoft Giving campaign. What is the campaign? Throughout the month of October there is a company wide focus on giving back and supporting our community. One of the Giving campaign elements is a big poster in the hall of our building. The poster has reasons why a number of our execs are giving and a big pen is attached so that the rest of us can write in our reasons. I'm tempted to write, 'To stop my Mom from posting nagging comments to my blog' :). Just kidding, that's not why I gave this year. I gave because:

  • People need help recovering from disasters. I've been there and benefited, it's time to give to those who are recovering now.
  • I benefited from Canada's subsidized university education program.
  • I support consumer rights and we need a group advocating for us.

If you're a Microsoftie, it's not too late, visit http://give.

365gay.com, NYC Gay Club Sued For Discrimination:
Three women, two of them transsexual, are suing New York City mega club Splash alleging the club bars females.
While in NYC we went to Splash and yes, it was definitely filled with lots of men. Though I think I saw two women.

I think it is wrong that these women were barred from the club, but wanted to point out that in New York men are often barred from straight clubs.

While in line for Lotus there was a single man in front of our group who was told that he wasn't allowed in unless he was escorted by a lady. Another night a male friend and I tried to get into a bunch of clubs that were 'closed for private parties'. However, we were presented with the option of buying one to two bottles (at $300/bottle) if we really wanted in. However, while the doorman was telling us this single women were being allowed in without having to be on the guest list or committing to buying a bottle.

So there's definitely discrimination in NYC, and it goes both ways.
