Business Week, The Real Reasons You're Working So Hard... :
More than 31% of college-educated male workers are regularly logging 50 or more hours a week at work.

This article does a good job of summarizing the superficial reasons of why we're working as hard as we are but I feel like it doesn't dig down to the root cause of why we are truly working as hard as we are. And their treament of what to do about these long hours is very light. Hiring collaboration experts is not the answer.

In our group, work/life balance is always a hot topic. The simplest thing our management has started doing is emphasizing that we don't need to respond to email on weekends or during the evening. And for the most part they're setting a good example by not sending mails so the individual contributors don't feel like they have to instantly respond. It's a small thing, but it's a start.
