The Globe and Mail, Ottawa's MP3 fee quashed:
Consumers may soon be paying less for MP3 players after the Federal Court of Appeal ruled that special copyright levies applied to digital music players are not legal.

While I am pro-artist compensation, the levy was the wrong way to compensate artists. So I'm very glad to see this struck down. What sort of savings will this mean to consumers?

  • Players under 1 gig had a $2 levy
  • Players between 1 gig and 10 gig had a $15 levy
  • Players over 10 gigs had a $25 levy

And remember they collected the levy on blank media for something like five years before they started distributing it to artists!
