U of Waterloo wastes $2400 of student's money

Yesterday our prof failed to show for our class claiming he 'somehow got the idea that class started at 10:30' (instead of 10).

Of course the venerable Mark Schaan in his Arts Frosh Orientation video tape assures us that at university the 'five minute rule' does not apply and that you should stay to the bitter end of the class in case the prof decides to show at the last minute. Now the frosh might fall for that but we sure didn't.

Oh well. Better luck next class?

Do not pay your landlord with cash

No, I didn't learn this lesson the hard way but I have been having some problems with my (old) landlord (the infamous 'Northie') and I've been very thankful that I have bank statements which clearly show all the money I've given him.

It's that *free cd* time of the week again over at Emergent Music. So let me tell you about the free CDs we have even though none of you seem interested in *free* CDs:

So our house got egged two nights ago in the middle of a thunderstorm. I believe the egger could have been one of Anne's many disgruntled 'boyfriend's. Or it could have been 9 year Dylan whose lawn mowing contract we cut short when Anne brought us home our own electric mower.

Either way, there's a $1000 cash reward* leading to the conviction of the punk asses who did this to us.

*reward may be less than stated.

Bah.. So my harddrive started to go whacky at the end of last week but nobody at Dell believed me because it wasn't failing their diagnostic program and the refuse to support my installation of Win2k because *they* didn't install it.

Preparing for the moment when the harddrive actually would crap out I started backing up stuff on Sunday and took a break Monday because my notebook stopped crashing. Everything was fine. And that's when I started getting 'Delayed Write Failure's and Windows stopped booting. So Monday I spent hours piecing together a bootdisk with network support so that I could copy off everything I hadn't backed up. This took a day. And finally at the end of the day the harddrive began to fail Dell's 'confidence test' so I called up and they finally warrantied the thing. Of course I probably could have called them a week ago and said 'it failed your confidence test' and they would have warrantied it because they didn't ask for error numbers/messages or the like. Live and learn.. My power adapter's connector also broke off again and they sent me a new one too (they really should change the design..).

And today I re-installed Win2k and all the assorted program, utilities, and patches that I need. It seems to me that the whole process of installation could be streamlined. Some service out there should know what I had installed previously and just re-install it all automagically instead of me having to piece it all back up together, applying patches in all the right order,...

So if you need to piece together a boot disk let me recommend:
