Canadian Government: Electronic Copyright Fund
Objective To assist in the development and implementation of online, copyright management and licensing systems and mechanisms that facilitate access to and the exploitation of one or all types of existing or copyrighted works, in particular Canadian, including works where multiple ownership arrangements exist, preferably through the development of a single-window model.

I'll follow BB's reactionary lead that this smacks of the Canadian government funding DRM development.

Microsoft Monitor: The Blog in Your Living Room
Why shouldn't the family want to gather in front of the Media Center PC to watch a video or photo blog?
I was amazed at how easy it was to drop the memory for my camera into my Media Center and browse my photos (and rotate, delete, and touch them up) (thanks Ben! (Ben, my office mate, 'owns' this functionality)). The end to end solution I now want to see is using my remote control to get them on my blog. I have a bunch of photos languishing on my camera simply because it's too much effort to get them onto my blog. I need it made easier and that's what the 10' UI is all about.

This post is for all the new and soon to be new grads at Microsoft.

This evening I went to the NGN (New Grad Network) 401k American Express Financial Seminar. Basically, if you haven't signed up for 401k contributions and the ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan) spending an hour and a half going to this will motivate you to do so. It will also some basic/general questions you might have about them. If you're already signed up for those two benefits, plan to, or are a sophisticated investor then skip this.

Needless to say, I will soon be signing up for both those things. I've been planning to but what with buying furniture and waiting for the right windows and all that, I haven't.

Yesterday John introduced me to the Madison Market our local organic grocery store. It's a co-op, small, zen, and makes you feel all good inside. For instance, 10% of the profits from my cereal goes to peace! (I cynically wonder how much profits they earn...) They're so hip that they sell Bitch as an impulsive buy in the checkout line. Take that Safeway and QFC.

So yes, I'm going to try and switch to eating organic food at home. Though I'll continue to eat McDonald's on the road, like a trendy yuppie on the weekend, and a corporate tool during the week (link is to a funny Stranger article this week about Microsoft cafeterias).

Yay, for new toys!

Tomorrow morning I'm trading my HP 873n Media Center in for the Viewsonic m2000 Media Center because I need an optical (SPDIF) audio out port on it to get surround sound working with my receiver.

Ideally I'd like to try a Gateway 901x (link goes to 901) but I'm pretty far back on the waiting list.

Engadget, WiFi goes to the (motor) races:

PC Watch reports on what sounds like a trend that could be taking hold at Japanese motor racing events: streaming live video from cameras around the circuit to a ton of WiFi access points so that anyone with a PDA and a wireless card can view the race live, whatever ditch or hospitality tent they happen to be in.
This is so cool. I'd totally buy a PDA if I could use it at hockey games to watch replays, pull up scores, and close angle coverage. This would also be neat to see at concerts, or any live stadium event, for when you're stuck in the nosebleeds. And of course once WiFi and higher resolution screens come to cell phones everyone will be enabled to 'plug' into this.

Press release, VBox Announces Support for Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center:
DTA150 and DTA151 add Digital High Definition television reception and recording to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004

Now if only my building had a @#$% HDTV cable provider!

In any event, this is very cool. I think it's also big news. I'm surprised this hasn't popped up on Engadget, Gizmodo and PVRBlog. I mean enough press people clamour for this.

./: Technology Makes New Cars Too Expensive to Fix.

Maybe all the techies laid off because of offshoring need to consider picking up some automotive skills. Firstly, it's hard to outsource car repair and secondly, mechanics bill quite a bit per hour.
