My big news for the weekend is a I bought a boat, though I won't take possession until later this week.

What'd I buy? It's a 1998 Mastercraft Maristar 225 VRS. Some features:

  • Same hull as Mastercraft's X-30.
  • Brand new 330 HP Corvette engine (0 hours)
  • 12 person capacity! (23' w/v-drive so it's very roomy)
  • Titan Tower w/board racks
  • CD stereo with amp, sub, upgraded speakers, and line in for the iPod
  • Hot and cold hand held shower
  • Cockpit heater
  • Bimini top
  • Perfect pass wakeboard cruise control
  • Swim deck
  • Tandem trailer

Now I need to go pick up a wakeboard, slalom ski and all the associated accessories.

So why am I wasting money on a boat? Before heading off to university I had the good fortune of spending every summer at 'The Lake' and quite simply, I miss that. Every summer was spent outdoors and on the water. Whether it was at the yacht club learning to sail, learning to race, eventually coaching, or out on our boats with friends wakeboarding, waterskiing, tubing, kneeboarding, exploring... We did it all. With all those memories, being stuck in an apartment downtown within sight of water was just too heart breaking last year. Of course I can't afford water front property here so I'm settling for a slip at a local marina (somewhere on Lake Union) and a kick ass boat.

(The good news is I should be able to maintain my aggressive 25% gross income savings program. I just need to cut back on the expensive dinners and drinking)

I'm sure some of you are wondering why I didn't buy a sailboat because with what this boat is costing me, I certainly could have bought a very nice sailboat. There are two reasons why I didn't buy a sailboat. The first is that it's very easy to get rides as crew for races but very hard to get wakeboard tows. Secondly, it's quite affordable to charter a sailboat and ridiculuously expensive to charter a motor boat. And the motor boats that are available for rent are pretty lame.

Here's to the best summer yet!

Our hockey season wrapped up tonight. We finished third overall in div 5 which is the best our team has ever done. I'm definitely playing the best hockey I've ever played. And I'm sure my Dad would be surprised to hear I'm one of our starting centres and not on defense. Now I just need to focus on putting the puck in the net and staying out of the box (I took a needless cross checking penalty in their zone tonight).

Go Red Army!
