Tonight I took Natalie out on a date (Natalie wants the world to know that I am indeed dating the amazing Natalie Gordon (and that we go out on dates. and when I say 'we' in the webblog then I really mean her)) to a concert at Convocation Hall at the University of Toronto titled 'Music Alert'.

Friends of Medicare Toronto present MUSIC ALERT! an evening of impassioned performances with Rick Mercer, Gordon Downie, Connie Kaldoe, David Sereda, Shirley Douglas, Sarah Polley, Amoy and The Band, Red Spirit Singers and Samba Squad.

Anyhow. Just got back. Great show! Since it was a concert to raise awareness for medicare there were some video clips and speeches. I know this isn't PC but it sure reminded me of the 2 minutes of hate from 1984 :) (actually here is the entire book. I was really only looking for the 2 minutes reference, but it's all there for your enjoyment (if you have lots of time)).

Natalie was disappointed that Sarah Polley was just bait and not actually part of the show. She really only said about 3 words. But you could win a chance to have dinner with her.

I think that going to see Gord Downie will really affect how much I'm listening to the new album. I.e. I'm going to like it more. Nothing like a live show to get you in the mood. (Hmmmm. that sounds dumb). But hey. Whatever.

Note from the concert:

  • Gord had two or three sips from a beer. He made a comment about the hall not being licensed
  • He was reading/signing from hand written lyrics. Unfortunately they collected them at the end of the show (I wanted to steal them!)
  • Gord always smiles a lot when performing.
  • The band was true sketch. They were dressed up like hosers or something.
  • No encore :(
  • Lots of cheers calling for hip classics even though it was just Gord
  • That's all I remember. No not really. Just nothing else worth noting.

Other note worthy news for the day: I got a gym membership! Yes, that would be my first ever gym membership (the one I had at UofM doesn't count since I only ever used the showers and didn't actually work out). Anyhow, Maeve (I should post a picture of her online..) dragged me to 'step class' on the premise that lots of people there are of varying skills. Lies! I was the only person who varied. And then when Natalie got home she tells me that there's a beginner step class for novices like me. But you're probably thinking what kind of guy goes to 'step class'. 'They' (Nat&Maeve) assure me they do. I even saw some. My rationale: Got to start with the easy to stuff. Not that step is easy because it sure ain't. But it's like you just go at a set time. Don't have to think (well you do). But you know what I mean.

The street cleaner just went by. It's 11:21pm. Damn we have clean streets.

Brad at MI got way closer at REM then we did as you can see from his concert photos. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
