Leah McLaren tells me I'm not going to be able to get Natalie any presents this year:
Kitchen appliances. They are the death of romance.

The problem with things like kitchen appliances is that we live in this limbo world where you want things like good toasters and a nice set of pots but since you aren't living on your own you don't want to buy something nice for fear that it won't withstand the abuse of a house full of people or you don't know where you'll be settling in a year so why buy something nice if you aren't going to move it. So we end up making do with 20 year old TV's, crappy non-toasting toasters, Walmart's cheapest BBQ, scratched pots, and the worlds smallest microwave.

In short, I can't wait to move out and yuppie it up.

(And it is funny to fantasize about 'getting your own place' when you own your place).

I'm a firm believer that everyone needs a cell phone. Nothing is more irritating than trying to get together with people only to discover you can't get a hold of them.

What's even more irritating is when someone has a cell phone but never turns it on and doesn't even have voice mail. I must admit that the next time I see Jacks I might throw down $7 on the bar so she can get voice mail for the week that I'm in town.

But don't think I'm some ultra connected freak. I turn my phone off when I go to bed or when I'm studying and I make full use of my caller id.

Jan Wong in the Globe and Mail's Christmas carols disappear from school concerts:
One teacher, whose class is singing Joy to the World this week, declined to be interviewed, even when promised anonymity. Another agreed to talk about her school's secret plan to slip a few carols into the "holiday" concert but later decided it was too risky.
