Wall Street Journal: DigitalConsumer Takes Up the Fight Against Copyright Plans in Congress.

We need this in Canada.

Also, CNET: Morpheus seeks new role in music biz

StreamCast Networks, the creator of the popular Morpheus file-trading software, is set to unveil a plan Thursday that it hopes will help it become a more legitimate means of music distribution.

The company is adding new digital rights management, or anti-copying technology, to its set of software and services. It's calling for independent artists to distribute their work through the Morpheus file-trading network, using this technology to help solicit payment for their work and guard against piracy.

So what makes StreamCast/Morpheous think that they can succeed where the majors have failed? There has been absolutely no evidence that a proprietary format can succeed. And for an example of failed proprietary technology + independent musican support we only need to look north to the failed FLIPR in Quebec. Though it'll be interesting to see StreamCast's plan (or lack there of) to:

  1. Convince independents to offer up their music, then
  2. Introduce people who thrive on mainstream music to independent musicians
  3. Extract money from those people
  4. And then distribute it back to musicians.
Good luck!
