With two 'wins' in the digital music arena today we need to balance it with some bad news. After Movie88.com had their Internet connection cut here's some more bad news:
Taiwanese police have seized the servers of a Web site that violated U.S. copyright laws
From Mercury News article.

While the American government has no problems imposing their laws elsewhere how would they feel if say the government of Afghanistan sought to impose their laws on Americans?

More 'big' music news today. This time from Judge Patel:
The evidence now shows that the plaintiffs have licensed their catalogues of works for digital distribution in what could be an overreaching manner. The evidence also suggests the plaintiffs' entry into the digital distribution marketplace may run afoul of antitrust laws.

A woman sued Sunncomm and Music City Records because she had been sold a Charley Pride CD (checkout the reviews of the CD on Amazon. This little scheme can't have been good for sales) protected with a copy protection scheme, the case has now been settled and here is the super short version of the settlement:
  1. Any music downloads related to the CD will be anonymous
  2. The defendants will purge all personal identifying info that they've already collected
  3. The defendants will amend their privacy policies to comply with 1
  4. Consumers will have the right of first sale
  5. Consumers will be able to return the CD if it doesn't work
  6. Defendants will include a warning that the CD may not work in all players
  7. Defendants will include a warning of the requirements for playing the downloading files (they're Windows Media files)
  8. Defendants will include a warning that the CD is not compatible for CD rippers
  9. Defendants will publish a website with a list of compatibility issues
  10. Defendants will include a warning that downloaded files may only be downloaded six times.
View a copy of the settlement agreement.

Looks like a win for consumers even though I'm sure we'd all prefer to see them remove the copy protection completely.
