Manager, Customer Relations
Blockbuster Canada Co.
401 The West Mall, Suite 110
Toronto ON M9C 5J5

Dear Manager, Customer Relations,

Recently I went to rent a few movies at Blockbuster. Immediately upon entering the store a sales clerk removed my 'backpack' from my possession while not removing the bags of the women in our party despite my bag being the same size as theirs.

What I am writing to you about is the blatant sexism I experienced. While walking around the store I noticed that many women had bags with them. Why had their bags not been removed from their person? Why had I been singled out to have my bag removed? And indeed I had been singled out because when I went up to the counter to retrieve my bag I discovered that my bag was the only such bag behind the counter!

As I am sure you are well aware the Charter of Rights and Freedoms here in Canada explicitly states that no one shall be discriminated against either due to sex or age, which leads me to wonder, had I been a 40 year old father entering the store with my two children and I had a bag with me would it have been removed from my person? It's clear from my experience that night that you were discriminating against me because of my sex, but were you also discriminating against me because of my age? Is a 20 something with a bag seen as a particularly high risk 'customer'?

I am also writing to complain about your policy of removing bags from patrons in general. I think it's absurd that you assume that each of your patrons may be a potential shoplifter. I would never make such an assumption about my customers. But yet you make such an assumption by having a 'removing bags from select patrons policy' even though you have each movie tagged with anti-theft devices! While I appreciate the redundant nature of your security policies I do think there is a point where you can go overboard with security at the risk of alienating the customers you are attempting to serve.

I look forward to your prompt response and action.

Regards,
Matt Goyer
