Death By Popcorn

While in Winnipeg I heard about a mocumentary about the Winnipeg Jets named Death By Popcorn. Doesn’t look like it has hit Netflix yet but the CBC does have an article about it, The Plight of the ‘Peg :

Using found footage, Atelier members Walter Forsberg, Matthew Rankin and Mike Maryniuk crafted Death by Popcorn, an art-house documentary about the long, unhappy demise of the Winnipeg Jets, who debuted in 1972 and were sold off in 1996 to become the Phoenix Coyotes. There are no happy endings, no big heroes, no last-minute cavalry charges in this tale. Just defeat piled on defeat, and that’s the way the Atelier likes it.

You can’t. They received a cease and desist order from CTV, as their film was using their footage apparently doomed for the dumpster and without permission. As far as I can tell, it’s in legal limbo, as the Canadian Copyright laws don’t contain a parody exception.

This actually is a pretty big issue when you think about it and I sort of wish the Conservatives would try acting on it so that they could take a big slap from the other parties in response. But for now Harper seems content with doing nothing at all until he can convince everyone that he can be trusted and thus get a majority. That’s the moment to be warry of, when you have something reminiscent of what existed under Chretien and exists under Bush, with one party running everything with a clear mandate to do whatever they like without any checks and balances.

That sucks. It’d be nice if they leaked it to the web so we could enjoy it regardless of the legal issues.

I’ve seen it. It is really clever, really well edited, for an amateur film. No one comes out looking all that bad (apart from Rod Black), so it’s surprising that CTV didn’t agree to licence the material.

correction: it’s been leaked onto both Pirate Bay and google video.
