Globe and Mail: Why Harvard hates straight A's. True facts from the article:
  • '50 per cent of Harvard students were finishing courses with grades of A or A-minus.'
  • 'Last year, an extraordinary 91 per cent of Harvard graduates were also given some type of honours on their diploma, about three times the rate of other Ivy League universities.'
Maybe I'm going to the wrong kind of school because here an average mark is a C if you're lucky.

Ah well if you fork over $100k you should be able to write whatever you want on your transcript right?

I got back from the accountants to find my laptop had BSOD'ed. Not cool! This is the second time I've come home to that. The worst part is losing all my open windows (approx 20 at any given moment).

But once I got rebooted I did have an email telling me my mark for Math239 was online and so I'm pleased to announce that my mark was the average for my section plus 8%. So not too bad! In fact it's my best math mark yet.

Today I also ordered a phone line for the new place and Internet. I settled for Rogers because Bell doesn't let me sftp with my server in Maine for some whacked out reason. I had toyed with getting a more serious connection but at $675CDN a month (for a symmetrical 4.0mbps burstable (2.0 sustained)) I didn't think my work would spring for it.

Bell has a commercial 3.0mpbs service called KeyPak for $179/mn. But this is the confusing part:

The solutions includes:
  • Unlimited Internet high speed access
  • [cut]
  • 5 Gig data transfer
So how does that work!? Unlimited up to 5 gigs!? And is it 3.0mbps sustained? Burstable?? Ugh.. Details!

Mark didn't like that car analog from a few days ago. I suspect it's because he didn't actually read the article I was referring to :). In any event Jenny has a bunch of analogies for the current SonicBlue situation talked about in B2.0's Erasing ReplayTV:
It's like magazine publishers suing the printing industry for allowing their pages to be printed on paper that can be ripped out of a magazine.

It's like radio industry suing auto makers because they include a mute button on the stereo console (which our Ford Windstar has).

It's like the movie studios suing movie theaters for allowing ticket buyers to walk into a theater after the commercials and previews. Or for letting them leave the theater to use the bathroom.

It's like the record labels suing companies that make CD players because they have a fast-forward button on them.

Like I said, it's absurd. Industries fall on hard times, changing times, and evolving models. The entertainment industry is no different than any other, in that you shouldn't be able to sue a company out of existence just because they don't follow your business model and help maintain it.
